Activity:  Gardening with or without a garden.

Equipment:

Multi-purpose compost, gravel, seeds, or plants, child’s toy lorry, toy crane, pegs, plant pot, water.

What to do:

  • You will need multi-purpose compost for growing seeds and big plants.

  • Add gravel or pebbles to the bottom of a plant pot before filling it with compost. The water will then drain away so that the roots of the plants do not get soggy.

  • Seeds – buy seeds in packets.  Read the packet with child(ren) to find out details.

    or

  • Try growing plants by taking seeds from vegetables or fruit that you eat from plants in the garden, if you have one.

  • Plants – you can have an instant garden with fully grown plants.  Small, young ones do not take up much space.

  • Each bought plant will come with a label.  Read it with your child to find out what they need in order to grow well.

Variations

Use toy vehicles to transport the plants.

Have a tub of compost for children to play with.  Use the pegs to put plant labels on sticks by plants.
