Activity: Gardening with or without a garden.
Multi-purpose compost, gravel, seeds, or plants, child’s toy lorry, toy crane, pegs, plant pot, water.
What to do:
You will need multi-purpose compost for growing seeds and big plants.
Add gravel or pebbles to the bottom of a plant pot before filling it with compost. The water will then drain away so that the roots of the plants do not get soggy.
Seeds – buy seeds in packets. Read the packet with child(ren) to find out details.
Try growing plants by taking seeds from vegetables or fruit that you eat from plants in the garden, if you have one.
Plants – you can have an instant garden with fully grown plants. Small, young ones do not take up much space.
Each bought plant will come with a label. Read it with your child to find out what they need in order to grow well.
Use toy vehicles to transport the plants.
Have a tub of compost for children to play with. Use the pegs to put plant labels on sticks by plants.
